The Story of Zanzibar

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Tanzania | Monday, September 13, 2010 | 5 photos

My name is Guna and I come from Latvia - a small country in the North of Europe. I am 22 years old and since 7 years I think of photos as something more than just a piece of photo paper with something on it. To me taking photos is one of the few ways how to tell a story. A story about culture, nature, people, emotions, events or simply memories. Some people are writers, some - painters and some are photographers, but they all have the same goal - they tell a story how they see it.
2 years ago I went to Africa for the 1st time in my life. I visited Tanzania's island Zanzibar. Till now none of my trips have been able to impress me more that this little island. And that is the reason why I chose to apply myself with these photos, with this story.
The Story of Zanzibar tells how different this place is - you can see a fairy tale scene in the ocean, but you can see a horror scene in the local fish market. This place can do both - shock you and make you fall in love with it. That is why I chose the photo with the boat "You never know" to sum up - the island is full of surprises and you never know what is behind the corner. There might be a living room painted in inexpressive colors but across the street - a child giving you a colorful look that expresses more than words.
That is my very short summary about my Story of Zanzibar, which has inspired me to apply for the Travel Photography Scholarship 2010 which could give me the chance to take photos in Bhutan and make them into a Story of Bhutan.
