When in Rome...

The spiral staircases in the Vatican Museum truly are a marvel to the eye. Although the intricacy and beauty of this design is often captured from above, I had no idea how amazing these stairs looked from below. Like many things in the Vatican, you need to "look up" to appreciate the full beauty.

My European journey began in Rome. The historical sites that I visited in Rome were an amazing introduction to Europe. As still as the pillars supporting the building, but with vibrant colours that make them stand out against backdrop of the Holy See, the Pontifical Swiss Guard are the oldest active military unit in existence.

Although unable to fully comprehend what occurred in the Colosseum all those years ago, my youngest daughter was wide-eyed and amazed with this site. To me, this photo shows a contrast between youth and history.
