My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Sure, it’s the Grand Canyon; when we think of ‘place’ can you be any more cliché? But that day where age corresponds to date will only occur once in your life, and to spend it in such a location as this means it can never be forgotten. I spent my 23rd birthday, on the 23rd of the month, descending the Grand Canyon on muleback. These photos depict some of my memories of the space and the silence of this hole in the ground, and of the wonder of the sun appearing over the rim and gradually lighting the Canyon the following morning.
I love to travel, I love to photograph, I love to write. I may not be one of the more experienced photographers entering this competition, but the opportunity to combine these passions and to learn more is an amazing opportunity. I am a PhD student in the sciences, aiming to establish a career in publishing and science journalism, and this travel scholarship would give me the chance to build on my technique and knowledge of photography and travel journalism. I love to find the shapes and patterns in landscapes and architecture, which is hopefully evident in the photos I have submitted here.
The chance to see Bhutan at this early stage of its introduction to the modern world, and to witness the meeting of tradition and the contemporary in this country, is incredibly exciting, and would be an amazing experience.
