This monument on Petermann Island is a tribute to three scientists who were swept out to sea on an ice flow in 1982 after seeking refuge in a nearby hut. Each of the men had two doses of morphine in their individual supply kits. “The cruel thing is, it requires three doses per man to do the job.” - Robert K Headland, Expedition Historian.

A refuge hut lies dormant on Petermann Island along the Antarctic Peninsula. This seemingly unremarkable building would surely be the brightest beacon of hope for displaced and desperate explorers.

As you float through this abstract world, you begin to see familiar things staring back at you in the grand ice sculptures. The “Iceberg Graveyard” along the Pleneau Peninsula would surely have tormented those who were stranded here with bittersweet visions of home.
