My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited - Lewis and Harris, Scotland

There are not many trees here, as the weather is so windy and harsh. The whole island is full of the juxtaposition of barrenness and life. Here a house stands surrounded by windswept trees and not much else. A natural, yet lived in environment. It feels like being in the middle of nowhere, yet every corner brings a sign, just a sign, of human life.

Harris and Lewis, in Scotland, are fascinating places full of contrast. To me, this picture captures the essence of this part of the world - an almost untouched natural beauty, but with the surprising element of modern conveniences. I almost wonder how they put these power lines here as there's hardly any sign of human life for miles.

The vast moors are dotted with shielings, little huts shepherds use in summer. You walk for miles, away from villages, out of phone signal, away from human life, to find these empty huts with only subtle signs of life. There is nothing else out here and it's stunning.
