Recently took the train from Mandalay to Rangoon. If you are contemplating this - Don't do it! It is probably the worst train ride in the world.
If you must risk it, take your own food do not buy on board, and do not use the porters on arrival. Both these things lead to ripoffs. Apart from this the burmese are generally honest and trustworthy.
