My Video scholarship 2010 entry

WORLDWIDE | Monday, 19 July 2010 | Views [352] | Scholarship Entry

The inspiration for this film came from one of the most mesmerizing creatures I have ever had the fortune to encounter: the lion. A beast that commands respect from a glance, fear from a snarl and awe from mere presence embodied the ideal subject. Upon closer inspection, however, the lioness held even more intrigue to me.

After receiving orientation lectures on location, reading numerous tomes of insight and being directed to the best places to locate the pride my head swarmed with information. However, it was the lionesses of Entabeni that revealed the true natural wealth of the area, as well as a fascinating experience: frustration of no tracks to follow, breathless anticipation when approaching the pride, exhilaration of discovery and sense of privilege when they allowed me to film them was unparalleled. As such, I am not only grateful for this local encounter with my hosts for the footage I gained, but for the honour of being allowed to inhabit their realm for those precious moments.

It is my ambition to pursue a career in documentaries in the hope of recapturing those heart racing, breathtaking, frustrating and ultimately triumphant moments that unite in the adventure that is film making.
