“Salmon Roe” I sat quietly on a beautiful estuary riverbank in the Great Bear Rainforest. I was watching a mother grizzly across the river water as she feasted on salmon carcasses with her yearling cub. Looking down at my feet I noticed the salmon eggs scattered across the pebbles. They were brilliant as jewels in the sun. I loved this remnant that hinted at an earlier feast.

“Salmon Carcass”
The returning runs of spawning salmon are integral to life in BC’s northern coastal forests. Even the trees themselves feast on the salmon. Death and life are the same thing in this wilderness.

“Spirit Bear”
A spirit bear fishing for salmon in the autumn. It was a dream to be near this magnificent creature. BC’s western coastline, the land, microorganisms, wildlife, forest ecology, cultures and people all rely on the flourishing life and health of the ocean. So too do the grizzly bears, the wolves that hunt salmon and the spirit bears.
