About gemmachilton
Hello! I am a writer and editor originally from Sydney, Australia, but I'm currently based in Devon in England.
I love to read and write and travel and cook, and perhaps above all I love adventure - whether it's a multi-day wilderness hike or wandering an unfamiliar city alone. I also have a degree in journalism, and I once spent six months living and studying journalism in Denmark.
Mid-way through last year my husband and I left our secure jobs and our apartment in sunny Sydney and made our way over to the UK to live for at least a year. My husband left a successful job in engineering to find a new career path that would let him flex his creativity a bit more, and spend less time 'driving a desk' - he signed up to a year-long fine furniture making course, which was the main catalyst for our relocation. Me? I'm always up for an adventure, so I came along for the ride.
We spent five weeks camping and riding our bikes around Iceland on our way over here - which was an experience beyong description, although that's not to say I didn't try. I kept a regular blog about our 1200km bike tour, which you can read here. Soon after settling into the UK, I was lucky enough to find work as an editor and writer at a local boutique publisher and marketing agency which specialises in food and travel, a job that takes me to some of the best restaurants and venues across South West England. Most days you'll find me cycling the 10 miles to and from work on the beautiful Tarka Trail.
What next? I have no idea, which is the best part! The plan is to return home to Australia not long after my husband is a qualified fine furniture maker - I have the Australian sun, her endless skies and the salt of the Pacific in my veins. In the meantime, however, there's Europe at our doorstop - and we have tentative plans for a Big Trip to Africa on our way home. (Because, when you're Australian and travelling, everywhere is 'on the way' home. Except maybe Antarctica. And that's definitely on the list.)
