Salt of the Earth - My Scholarship entry

As a designer I have always had an interest in photography, the first camera I bought was a fully manual slr with a 50mm prime lens. I was hooked.
Fast forward to 2007, I took a gap year around the world. My creative outlet was to document the people and places in the countries I visited. I overcame my fear of asking people for photos and I found I loved taking portraits. They could only say no, right?. The people I met in developing countries I visited was a humbling and sobering experience at times.
Now when I travel to countries I set myself mini briefs to document a culture, event or an just an environment. Photography is what drives me to get up at 5am for first light, it's the reason I will hike a mountain and the reason why I want to explore a new place.
I feel photography is a constant learning process and the opportunity to travel with Jason will help me take the next step to combine my love of travel with my love of photography and become a travel photographer. It will allow insight of what it's like to be on assignment, provide valuable hands on experience helping Jason and not forgetting the chance to document a fascinating country.
