My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My ultimate dream is to one day be a travel photographer/writer for National Geographic. This dream started while sitting in my living room on the farm in Africa where I grew up, surrounded by my parent’s collection of hundreds of editions of National Geographic magazines. This dream has been nurtured over the years by the many adventures I have been blessed enough to have, and by visiting many beautiful and exotic places. Urged on by my passion for travel I have visited and fallen in love with some amazing places, including the beautiful but poverty stricken villages of Thailand’s Northern hills. My trip to Thailand helped me make the decision to study photography. I want to use my photography as a way to bring awareness to issues that we are faced with in today’s ever changing world.

I am planning on studying Photography and English at University next year. While this will give me a solid technical foundation for my career, I know that I thrive from one on one learning and hands on experience. Having someone with the skill, knowledge, passion and experience of Jason Edwards mentor me would truly be a dream come true. The fact that this trip will be to Africa makes this scholarship even more appealing. Growing up in Africa gave me the most wonderful childhood and I would love the opportunity to photograph the land I loved and left behind a long time ago. I still remember its immense beauty, majestic wildlife and the barren but wonderfully captivating landscapes. These images are forever imprinted in my memories. The opportunity to record them with a mentor to guide me and show me how to do justice to the beauty of such a great land is beyond anything I could ever dream or hope for.
