My Photo scholarship 2011 entry
Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos
Four years ago at a University interview I was asked where I see myself in five years time? I naively responded, “photographing for National Geographic” to which the panel responded, “We all have our dreams!”
This photographic essay depicts a NAIDOC day celebrating the Indigenous culture in Australia. It has a typically casual relaxed Australian feel, however there is a strong nurturing, educational and importance to the images.
As a Melbournian and street photographer I found it refreshing to experience a day in the life of a community of Aboriginal people in an open, tactile environment. Seeing an Aboriginal person in the city, like many others with different backgrounds to my own, hides the contrast in culture and strength of community I witnessed on NAIDOC day.
I have chosen the single focus subjects of hands and feet to illustrate the iconic artistic and physical characteristics of paint, dots, skin and dirt. The passing on of the aboriginal culture to the next generation is shown through the father painting his daughter’s face and the community encouragement of the young dancers.
I am now weeks away from completing my Photo Media degree and it would be crazy if I were actually photographing with the National Geographic team in Africa, if only for 8 days!!
