When in India...

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Friday, October 15, 2010 | flickr photos

I am 20 years old and currently studying in my second year of a foundation photography degree in Sheffield, England. At the end of my first year I had saved up enough for the trip of a lifetime and in the summer of 2010 I packed a rucksack, my canon s90 and headed to India for 9 weeks to capture the lifestyles of the Indian people.

My first real trip away from home I landed in the largest democracy in the world, and found myself in a completely different culture. I spent my time in the north of India moving from village to city and mountain to desert. As well as the many famous landmarks I became fascinated with the people's way of life, which were influenced through the different religions, climates, landscapes and social status'. This became a focal point in the images I took, in particular I preferred taking candid photographs because they gave a natural, unconstructed insight into the lives of others. This expression of lifestyle was the narrative for my five chosen submission photographs.

From winning this competition I would gain so much useful experience on how to become an accomplished travel photographer. From the technical aspect it would help me to progress and develop my own photography skills. Where as from a creative standpoint it would give me the opportunity to take a fascinating look into wildlife photography. I am passionate about both travelling and photography and would love to visit Bhutan as its full of exotic wildlife and now recently discovered tigers are also in habitat there.
