Growing up in a middle class suburb of North Carolina I fantasized about the larger world. A favorite past time was to stare at the pictures in magazines like National Geographic, and Newsweek, or collections of Time Life books. I liked pretending to be those people in the photographs. Which lead to a life on the stage.
Acting got me out of North Carolina. I found my way to New York and Chicago. My path has lead me to Egypt, Mexico, Southeast Asia, South America, Los Angeles as well as other places. Along the way I took photos for fun. After nearly 25 years of acting I realized my passions had changed. Photography gave me a way to actually participate and interact with those exotic worlds.
A camera allows me to engage with other cultures. It invites an openness in people. They're excited that someone wants to hear their story and together we tell it.
This spring I'm finishing a bachelors degree in photography at Columbia College in Chicago with an emphasis on journalism. I hope that this opportunity with World Nomads will change how I see and take pictures. This experience would advance my ability more than anything I can imagine right now.
