My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Friday, August 6, 2010 | 5 photos

The southeast part of Puerto Rico which goes unnoticed to any tourist but is land for pro-surfers and amateurs. During summer and winter I love waiting for that call the night before when one of my friends to wake up earlier than any other day to a 30 minute drive to Maunabo's tunnel to get to one of the surf spots what I consider my playground. The first step in the sand releases me of everything that I ever know and my basic instinct are: taking pictures, surfing or meditate. It's my own little piece of heaven only few lucky ones get the chance to see it even many locals never get to see this.
I want to be chosen for this scholarship because this is the only thing I know that I would love to do with my life since I was a little girl. I've kept maps around my room I never wanted to be a doctor I just wanted to travel the world not any idea whatsoever could filter through my head unless it was about traveling. Later on as I was growing up I discovered a passion that would help me feel as close as traveling and that was photography, I could stare endless hours to picture taken by national geographic experts and see how flawless there work is. I picked up quickly on digital photography from what i would read in books and on the internet, sadly no one here teaches photography or support this art. Here in Puerto Rico it's very difficult to have that support from your family to go and thrive for a career in photography. I proved to my parents I could do it by being accepted into the University of Puerto Rico Fine Arts Department, finally i got credit for my talent. But I know that will never be enough for myself until I get out and explore and exploit my talents. I want my chance to actually test theories and knowledge of photography instead of just reading them in books.
