Flood Effects

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Pakistan | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

In July 2010, due to heavy monsoon rains one-fifth of Pakistan was flooded. According to the United Nations, estimate of more than 21 million people are injured or homeless as a result of the flooding.
So for relief works i went to Kalabagh, it is located on the western bank of Indus River.
It was terrifying to see homeless people. Many people lost their houses, but the most interesting thing was that those people loved the water in the river. It seemed like they were trying to forget what has happened to them, and were enjoying the moments of the life.
In the first picture we can see the destroyed houses. The area which came under the water influence.
Then in the second picture, these are the homeless children who are swimming under intense sun heat.
Adults and young children were swimming naked under the full bright sun. This was surprising because this usually do not happen ethically in the country.
Everyone’s trying to take water and forget the boiling heat. As shown in the pictures that some people are swimming in dirty river water, and a boy having bath under a local water hand pump.
Then in the last picture people are moving on boat to near places as roads are destroyed due to the flood. Moreover, it is written on the boat 'Acha, Khuda Hafiz', which means 'okay then, bye bye'.
This was a really good experience of exploring places at a time when there is a chaos in the area. Due to the intense heat my skin even got burnt.
