My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Argentina | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 5 photos

After 14 years living in Perth, Australia, I have moved back to Argentina, where I was born.
Much traveling and photographing in between, I am trying to adapt to life in the hood. It seems so much easier to comply by the rules and protocols when one is an observer than when one is supposed to belong to a certain culture. My accent betrayed me, I was never Australian. Now, back home, they ask me where I'm from.

In my photos we see people with big faces, bigger and smaller too than they would be in life. We see them staring at us, turning away from us. They think they are seeing and/or shunning me but really they are seeing you, or not seeing you, seeing instead the camera as endless chasm, a portal into other people’s desires. You regard them tenderly in this way, because you think you know a truth that they do not, that the photographer is an endless chasm too, that there is no limit, that the staring will continue, way past the time when the goats have fallen over.
