My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

My story goes something like this: In 2002, I was working as a web developer for a major company in San Diego, California. I had been working there for two years, during which time I gradually became aware I really didn’t like what I was doing and it was time to make a choice. If I stayed put, I would have held a steady job, doing something I didn’t enjoy, and likely bought a house and tried to raise a family. On the other hand, I could go after what I really enjoyed doing but the road ahead was much more unknown.
I made the second choice and decided to go back to school to get my degree in Visual Arts. After graduation in 2005, I worked for a bit in the film industry as a producer’s assistant and second assistant director, but working in the low budget sector of the Los Angeles film scene didn’t quite pay the bills. In 2007 I decided I was happiest when on the road and travel would be a good opportunity to try and create a portfolio for use finding work as a photographer. I left the United States in May, 2009 and my goal is to try and work my way around the world creating a portfolio along the way.
These five images were recently taken while exploring the Angkor Wat area of Siem Reap, Cambodia with my father. It was his hobby with photography that got me started while taking classes at community college. I fell in love with the medium and couldn’t get enough. Unfortunately, while I’ve always enjoyed the image-taking process, I’ve never had much luck pursuing the art form as a career. This trip has taught me a lot and given me the confidence I need to start thinking I can make it in this field. My hope in working with Jason is that I can continue to improve my photographic skills and learn what it’s like to be a working photographer.
