A taste of Hygge in Copenhagen

I haven't ever travelled very far, just a few countries in Europe, but my absolute favourite - and perhaps not on obvious one - is Copenhagen in Denmark. I first went there with my boyfriend a couple years back and loved the laid-back feel to the city which encompasses every aspect of life there. It's inhabitants largely cycle to get around, with children as young as 6 or 7 riding their own bikes to get around the city, making the air feel clean and fresh with a lack of pollution you get in so many cities. The food is exceptional, with an emphasis on fresh, healthy, earthy ingredients, so it's no surprise it is home to world-renowned restaurants Noma (which I'm still desperate to get on the waiting list for!). My favourite foods there are cod roe, and of course smørrebrød - a small open sandwich, usually with rye bread and complete with a range of delicious toppings, while for drink there are some fantastic breweries serving good local craft ale. The shopping is also brilliant, with a range of independent boutiques and craft shops, with beautifully-made ceramics being key, but what I love the most are the people. The danes are friendly, funny, and generous with their time, and it was speaking to a number of the city dwellers that really enhanced our experience (and sent us to some incredible local restaurants!). Hygge is something Danish people place great importance on. It can't be translated, but a definition I found is this: The art of building sanctuary and community, of inviting closeness and paying attention to what makes us feel open hearted and alive. And this is what I take with me when I travel, thanks to the people of Copenhagen.
