Procesión Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 5 photos

This photos were taken in San Miguel de Allende. I`ve been living here a year. A small town in the middle of Mexico that has many procession and carnavals all year long. From precolonial rituals, old Saint processions to modern world carnavals. I choose this procesion photos because I want to share the contagious faith of these people spread in the atmosphere: the first sun rays, the people walking, singing, praying, carrying flags, coffins, etc, and of course... the railroad tracks. Is a long walk across diferrent states that last several weeks where devoted comunities gather in a town called San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco state. There are many reasons to experience this travesy: be thankful that theyre children have work in the US, they pay penitency for healing diseases, a son out of jail, pray they family wont get deported back to Mexico, etc. People walking some times barefooted, hungry, thirsty, but for a few days social clases are completely erased. Many ranchs and small towns in the middle open theyre doors to help ease they way by giving them, tamales, atole, water, coffee, socks, blankets. I choose faith, this photos give me faith in my wishes. Two months ago I was hitchhiking with my wife in Michoacan`s beaches. Bizare things happened in that trip, lots of mind test but at the end I had a "conversation" with stars through the ocean (my altar). They asked me to ask them for something, and the only thing I could think of was: I want somekind of guidance or work through National Geographic. Two days after that I received this scolarship contest by a friend. I have faith, I know this scolarship is for me. Excuse my translation, I`m mexican.
