About fancyfree
We are a "young at heart" (if not body/mind) couple from the eastern U.S. who are fortunate enough to have some time to travel in our early retirement. We are young enough to still get around fairly well, but old enough to know better!
Our goal is to see as much of the world as possible while we are still able to do it. In the past we have traveled extensively through Europe with some trips to parts of Asia, but these have mostly been short duration trips related to vacations or business travel with some vacation time tacked on. Now that we don't have to worry about business, vacation limits, or schedules, our current priorities are focused on Southeast Asia and South America where we hope to do extended duration trips through those areas.
Our first big adventure is to Southeast Asia where we will be visiting Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and The Philippines. This is planned to be a five month effort which will begin in mid December 2006 and end in mid May 2007.
We are leaving home with only flights from the US – Singapore – Manila – US return booked, along with two days lodging at our first destination, Singapore. Everything from there will be “footloose and fancy free”. We have a general plan of attack with key areas of interest identified, but the exact routes, timeframes, and modes of travel are all open.
We are traveling light and with backpacks, but do not expect to do a lot of “hiking”. We expect to stay somewhere between the hostel and mid-range hotel accommodation levels, but will re-evaluate this as we go depending on the contacts we are able to make along the way. This could be a culture shock to us at our age!
In planning for this trip, we have found excellent sources of information in the blogs and journals of others going before us. In addition to allowing friends and family to follow our travels with this journal, we hope to make some contribution to the planning efforts of those following us at a later time.
