My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, October 18, 2011 | 5 photos

When people say that age is measured by time, I don’t believe them. I believe age is measured by moments – both good and bad. I also live by the notion that every individual, by any age, has their own stories. With photos, these moments can not only share a story, but also induce reflection or even encourage imagination within a viewer.
I travel a lot. I caught the bug when I was fourteen and had the rare opportunity to go to Cuba. I won a scholarship for my black and white documentary at seventeen years old after a second visit. Up till now I’ve used photography only as a hobby however, mostly just to help share my own adventures for my parents. I quit taking photography classes after high school because I thought I needed to concentrate on something more practical. Even while writing this, I feel very wrong.
I’m in my senior year at Florida State University finishing up my degree in Humanities focusing in music and human rights, minoring in social work. My life has consisted of a colorful spectrum of moments ranging from yellow, to blue, to black, and back to white – happy, sad, dark, and enlightening respectively. My goal is to raise hope around the world by listening to people, sharing my own and other’s stories, and through educational opportunities. Education to me means learning as much as teaching history, social relationships, and the philosophical issues of human dignity.
I want to learn more about expressing the world through a lens. Right now my best is pointing and shooting. I have no idea what can be done with a digital camera. Black and white film is beautiful, but I feel like reality is so much more and I’d love to learn how to best intertwine my passions.
