The Kolors of Kolkata

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

India | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

When I was vacationing in Kerala (India) several years ago, marveling at the uniqueness of its landscape and its people, a dream emerged from deep within. It was to touch every human life on this planet – to see, to greet, to make physical contact with every person that lived – and to visit every inch of land that makes up this earth and understand how it contributes to our collective existence. This dream lives on, although the years that pass do make its realization seem more challenging. If articulating this dream can only make way for a wider exploration of the earth and this great oneness I am a small part of, I shall find fulfillment indeed.

For me, travel and exploration are incomplete without my camera. I do not see through the camera though, it sees through me. It teaches me to look deeply – outside and in, to understand and empathize better, and to penetrate unto that thread that binds us as one people. A photo then is not an instant alone, but a story, with an unknown beginning, an undetermined end – a capture that stretches across the boundaries of time. In the fitting words of Blake: it allows me to see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower.

My passion for photography thrives on the love of these very stories – these windows of understanding unto a world I know so very little of. My earnest endeavor remains to hone my ability to find and to tell these stories, so I may give back – in small part – to this world that so generously gives of itself to me.

The photos I include here are from the sleepy east-Indian city of Kolkata, where the colors are ever-festive and the culture is rich, and the Bengal heritage has been preserved through the years.
