My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

The first time I traveled, I didn't realise that more time would be spent in transit than at each destination. I grew to love the time spent in the ephemeral in-between places, to appreciate the road as a goal in itself. I chose these photographs to tell a story of discovering a country and a people through moments spent in between and on the edges of the destination.
For me, photography is the ultimate medium for adventure - carrying a camera can lead you anywhere and everywhere, and an image can transport you to whole new worlds and amazing places just through the looking. The only thing more exciting than setting out with a camera to see what the world has in store is sharing what I've found with others at the end of the day. By documenting the rhythms of life in a new place I feel a part of it (and learn to see the familiar in a whole new light). I love photography, and more than anything I want to push myself to learn new things, to perfect my technique, in the hope that one day the images I take will have the same effect on someone as photography has had on me.
