Delighting in Turkey

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 4 photos

This first picture shows the interior of the dome of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul seen through the great chandelier that hangs very low.

The next picture was taken in the Üç Serefeli Mosque in Edirne, Turkey. This carpet pattering is very common among mosques here and is used to guide people's positions for prayer, especially when crowded. The pattern within each square points towards Mecca.

This photo was taken in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul. I chose this because the lighting reflects the quality of the time of day, while the rich red of the pomegranates is accentuated. Such street commerce greatly contributes to the atmosphere of the area.

This photo from Iznik, Turkey views modern homes through Ancient Roman ruins. Although so distant from each other in time, the ancient and the modern are physically side-by-side throughout this town.

Although I have been fortunate enough to have had extensive exposure to a variety of the arts, my understanding of photography has been sadly limited and I am eager to learn more about this unique medium. Furthermore, I am passionate about exploring diverse cultures and societies. My multi-ethnic background (American, Spanish, and Russian) has helped me to genuinely appreciate the insight and creativity that each culture has to offer, and my passion for art has shown me how those values can be communicated in the most meaningful ways.
