Cramped in Sydney

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

The photographs I have selected were not originally compiled as a group, but instead show a series of trips to my sister's compact inner Sydney apartment. The first image shows my sister's boyfriend, Nick Franklin, making some calls to their insurance company following a break an enter into their top level apartment block. Following this we tried to express the claustrophobic feeling with a cage shoot in one of the apartments less attractive rooms. The dirty, stained walls were the main attraction here. The two photographs taken at the Sydney fish market portray the two contrasting sides of Sydney I have witnessed in recent years; firstly the harsh, clustered bright inner city where there is far too much going on to keep focus, and the darker, lonely areas you can find just as the sun is dissappearing.
I am just nearing the end of my HSC and have applied for a Journalism/International studies degree at the Univeristy of Technology Sydney with the career ambition of moving into foreign correspondence and photojournalism. My country of choice for the international studies degree is China and I hope to one day be able to support a career somewhere inside the booming nation's borders. I feel this trip would be incredibly helpful in educating me on the travelling side of photography. Although my family has taken me all over South East Asia many of the photographs from those travels are hidden as negatives in the back of cupboards. This is another ambition of mine, I have been saving up for rangefinder camera for sometime now. I plan on acquiring one (Leica m6 if I'm lucky) before my post HSC overseas trip to Malaysia and Indonesia. I have fallen in love with the sort of results possible with these camera's. Stephen Dupont is definitely inspired a love of film inside me
