We all love to fantasize about spending a week in an amazing paradise island in the Mexican Caribbean: white sand beaches, gentle waves, delicious food and ice cold beers at reach. Peace and quiet days and fun parties at night. Sounds good right? It is not necessary to be a millionaire to enjoy all this, simply visit Holbox, a inhabited island near the coast of Cancun, that to me, is an Eden. If you already picture yourself and your next trip, relaxing in a hammock in front of a turquoise sea, flamingos in the distance, lobster pizzas and few people around, this island will catch you. And to enjoy its charms, i present the most complete -and real by the way- guide you could find to live a perfect dream week, spending less than you would pay for a trendy smartphone (not to mention that you will not need it).
Holbox, which in Mayan means "black hole", is an island about 40 miles long, 55 kilometers northwest of the resort city of Cancun, in the state of Quintana Roo, off the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, which forms part of the Biosphere Reserve and Protected Area Wildlife Yum Balam. It is believed that was originally inhabited by the Maya ancestors of local families and counts today with about 1200 inhabitants, mostly engaged in fishing and touris.
In this guide I will tell you everything you need to know for a perfect holiday; I will discuss the best way to get there without spending half of the budget, i will talk about where to stay, from hostels to shared rooms to small suites with all necessary amenities. I will also tell you about the best places to eat from a bowl of delicious seafood grilled, to a perfect hangover breakfast. I'll tell you what to do, where to do it and when to do it: the best activities including the most pristine beaches on the island, swimming in a pond, and kayaking while watching flamingos, everything on a budget. I assure you it will be the best five days you will have in a long time.
