We are Liz & Liz, friends from junior high who've seen each other
once in the last 10 years, now planning to embark on a 6-month
expedition through New Zealand. Who does that kind of thing?
Well, us, obviously, and the type of people who come to this site!
We're both 25, college graduates, who discovered we've been living
parallel lives in the seasonal world, though, as I previously
mentioned, we hadn't seen each other in years! Yet, via a phone
conversation, we've decided to backpack through Kiwi territory
together, acquiring temporary work as fruitpickers or farmhands or
whatever will pay the bungee-jumping bill.
After all, here we are in the adventure capital of the
world, with many wonderful opportunities to do amazing things like
go black-whitewater rafting. Who can pass up such a paradox? But,
who can afford it? Usually I cut corners with food*, subsisting on
animal crackers & peanut butter & jelly. I hear that the PB is
sadly lacking in our new environment, replaced by the reputedly
less-than-stellar vegemite. What are we to eat, cheaply?
*In no way does this reflect upon my icecream consumption; I am
willing to forego steak dinners and make certain other sacrifices,
but am adamant about fueling myself with pints of Ben & Jerry's
Phish food & Karamel Sutra...
Of course, we have plans to journal about the glories of New Zealand topography (& how we almost fell off the cliff, searching for a hobbit), about the quirky people we meet (it's inevitable!), about the fascinating
culture of kiwis/Maoris, about our first attempts at milking a cow...
and please, feel free to e-mail us/add comments w/ feedback, give us stupendous ideas on where to go, what to eat, how to survive on a tight budget, how to milk that dang cow, what to do when you're almost mauled by a kiwi bird. We'd love to hear from you!
