Nine days in Lebanon

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 4 photos

These photos were taken over Easter weekend (and my birthday) in Stockholm in 2010. I was feeling a bit isolated working abroad and missing the southern Alberta sky but almost immediately after stepping off the plane my spirits started to lift as the sky opened up. Every time I followed my wandering eyes, there was something to see and revel in - but only because I took the time to do so, to consciously find a smile in the little things. The first shot was to capture the blue evening sky over the toffee coloured city streets after a long day of connecting flights and desire to put my bags down and settle in. The second picture snagged the harbour quietly settled between the sea and the sky as I toured the city on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The third picture is the embers of twilight drawing my trip to a close, with the final picture capturing the cool that falls over a space when the sky closes off from us. And I thought a fitting farewell as I headed back the continental Europe, letting me know that the weekend was just a sampler in the smorgasbord of my life.

I take most of my pictures to convey both the beauty and reality of a place to my family and friends, many of whom either do not want to travel themselves or cannot travel. The pictures are sent with a recounting of my experiences and I would like to learn how to take photographs that better capture the energy of the space and its inhabitants.

I believe a picture may be worth a thousand words, but it is the narrative to the picture and not the description of it that creates the craving. (These pictures are part of a bigger set in my flickr account).
