My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, September 12, 2010 | 5 photos

My interest in photography started when I was 12 years of age and won a first prize in a photography competition in the local show. From there, as my interest grew, I won several awards through the local art gallery and regional art shows.

I have entered 5 photos which show the transition from my life in a harsh rural setting; the oppurtunity of the closed door to open and transport me to the wonders of overseas travel.

The first photo depicts a common scene of road kill and the effects of the hot summer sun. The ribs of the kangaroo signify the barrier in place, making the road ahead challenging. Following this photo is the image of a hard day's work of a typical farmer, preparing the cattle for marking. The fluctuating cattle market can make it difficult for a farmer and his family to make a worthwhile living and allow them to look beyond the closed door.

The Door which has been closed for sometime, can now be opened due to a profitable season. The cobwebs symbolise the length of time the door has been closed. The key can now be found to open the door.

Opening The Door introduces a world beyond the farm gate; a world of diversity, culture and experience. The majesty of the streets of Florence, saturated in history, makes one realise the comparative youngster which is Australia.

The grandeur of the Eiffel Tower empowers one with its strength of construction and shows what can be achieved through planning, endurance and persistent hard work.

I believe I am a strong candidate to be chosen for this coveted Travel Photography 2010 Scholarship. Bhutan is such a culturally diverse country and to be able to absorb and capture its beauty through the eye of a camera, while using my own perspective, would be an euphoric experience only a few could ever hope to achieve.
