My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I have a deep, meaningful and somewhat unhealthy relationship with my camera. I carry it wherever I go, whether that is to a party, for a walk on the beach, on a holiday or just to university. However, I'd like to learn more about my camera and the world, more than my own frustratingly limited knowledge. I want to travel to places I didn’t even know existed. I want to see sights, encounter wildlife, meet people, and most of all document it (using said beloved camera) to share with people who have the same zest for the world as I do.
I love the way I can capture moments in life I may never be able to relive again. I can look back and have a giggle, because it reminds me of a whole story and culture I have experienced. But to tell that story to someone else through photos, to capture a mood, I believe, is a whole other skill set that I hope to learn.
I’m currently studying at the University of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. Without trying to sound like a new aged hippy, I am very interested in biology and conservation ecology. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been exposed through the media to the deteriorating conditions of the natural world. My goal is awareness through my passion. Through photography I hope to capture peoples interest and reach something in them that makes them want to make a difference.
It may be a cliché, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and what you take from a picture can change the way you think and feel. I want unaware individuals to change and view the world with the respect it deserves, before we lose our selves to metallic grindings and lifeless technology.
