Reflections On The Road To Mandalay

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Myanmar | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

I'd like to make a confession. When I started travelling many years ago, I didn't own a camera. I was solely interested in the thrill of experiencing the exotic and discovering the unknown. It was years later when I developed an appreciation for the immediacy and visual impact of photography.

Fast-forward to today. I have a much more nuanced view of the world and a desire to capture authentic and compelling moments through my photography. My favourite images combine a strong narrative with aesthetic elements that reflect my personal style and perspective. My hope is to evoke emotion in viewers – whether that be appreciation, surprise, bemusement or revulsion.

My passion for travel and photography has led me to consider combining both elements as a career. However, I still create my fair share of trash-worthy images. At times I struggle to convey the story and I'm sure I miss opportunities because I do not spot them in the first place.

It is for these reasons that I'm keen to be mentored by Jason Edwards. I believe his expert guidance combined with field experience and my unflagging motivation to improve my skills will help me realise my dream career in travel photography.
