Have you ever been in a place where old legend about plain Earth that lays on a snake, turtle and three elephants seems to be quite a real fact? If answer is “no”, you are welcome to Sakhalin island.
This unique island with unseen giant plants, green heels and salt-smell sea winds placed somewhere between Russia and Japan.
For me Sakhalin has become a place where everything looks in other way. It seems as a separate world with unbelievably friendly people, unreal landscapes, fine mix of European and Asian cultures and many-many other specific things that difference the island from other Russian regions.
The most exciting place I’ve visited here is called “The air of mountains”. It is a highest green heel near Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the biggest island city. After climbing here by feet or by cable-railway you freeze wondered by magnificent view opened behind you. Just imagine blinked with evening lights city under your feet. Small moving cars, tiny people’s figures and toy-looking houses create vivid picture of human’s formicary. And above this hectic picture numerous speechless hills observe it while shining in bright red colors of sunset.
Standing so high and breathing windy fresh air I caught a strong feeling that exactly somewhere here there is a mysterious place where land finishes and giant myth animals hold its edge on their reliable backs. Moreover, this place helps to believe that wonderful things can happen, that you can hug the world, make life better and happier.
It is not an easy task to describe all impressions in one short essay. May be, tags associated with Sakhalin will attract you to read more about it – oil and gas, rare plants, red caviar, cold winters, Chekhov (famous writer lived and worked there for some time), fishing and hunting.
But more important thing hides deeper. This place clean up mind, dismisses negative thoughts and returns hopes and dreams. I do not know, how it works, but it actually does.
