My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Turkey | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 5 photos

Firstly, thanks for this putting in the hard work for to pass on an incredible experience, otherwise unimaginable to achieve. My reason for applying is because I’m carving out a path to doing what I love most; with this opportunity I’d hope to improve my means of telling the stories of the world through visual and written medium. I hope to take beautiful and captivating shots, and give myself a great chance at furthering my photographic skill from passion into a career. I hope to make the some contacts in the industry, and make the right impression – and of course learn bucket loads from watching a pro in action!

You will receive an amazing selection of technically mastered photographs. Whatever I may lack in tech skills - which will be improved - I have oodles of in emotional maturity and enthusiasm for life. My easy-going nature and hard working attitude will hold me in good stead for this experience. I own a sense of adventure, and I follow instructions well.

These images were shot by me in Istanbul, Turkey in June 2010. For 5 days I explored some of the remaining aspects of traditional Turkish belly dancing in its contemporary environment. I am interested in the change that customs and traditions undergo to survive and amalgamate with modern society, and how this affects the everyday living of its people. I was also drawn to the aesthetics of the dance world – the display of colours and energy are powerfully engaging. Had I given myself more time, I would have liked to locate retired performers and visually portray some of their experiences/memories. Yet, I was able to photograph private dance classes held by a professional belly dancer at her home studio, as well as capture some of the backstage energy of a tourist show run in downtown Istanbul.

Enjoy! :)
