My big belly

VIETNAM | Wednesday, 12 April 2006 | Views [1094] | Comments [4]

The Vietnamese people are very forward when it comes to discussing my beer belly. For the past 4 days I have been at a resort on the coast where there are few westerners. On a number of occassions people, especially women, have stroked my stomach and told me that it is big, like the stomach of a pregnant woman. They aren't expressing disapproval, just stating a fact and I seem to attract far more attention from the young ladies than any western, young, slim, attractive man.

Mike, I'm a bit dismayed at the anti-American feeling creeping into your dialogue. Please remember then as now the fighting forces were poor, uneducated kids, 18 or 19 years old. Don't confuse Americans with politicians. Maybe I'm sensitive as i become repatriated. I'm amazed every day how friendly Americans are. I work in a somewhat dangerous part of town. But people look you in the eye and say Hello all of the time. Cars stop for pedestrians! And you have to come here to experience the Red Sox Nation....the city is wild!

Miss you,
Cynthia

Well, Cynthia. Much as I love Americans I do feel that they should develop a system of government which is made up of the people, for the people, by the people. Perhaps that would restrain the actions of your 18 and 19 year olds. The decision to drop napalm and agent orange was taken at a senior level by mature people and backed by politicians. What happened to those politicians? Because car drivers stop to let you cross the road does not give you permission to drop bombs on people. But it was not anti-American sentiment. That would be to suggest that Americans support that behaviour and I don't think they do, but they seem to think that it was an aberration that would never happen again and unfortunately it is in Iraq and in Cuba. The only difference I can see is that the UK is now supporting you. A guy in the UK was sentenced to 7 months in jail today for refusing to fight in Iraq. His defence was that for him to go to war there would be as morally corrupt as the Nazis who claimed that they were "only following orders" Love and kisses Mike

Well said Cynthia

I think I can trace Mike's americaphobia to when those lovely Glazer guys aquired an interest in the most famous and succesful soccer team on the planet.

Have you also noticed how pro-russian he has become?

Ignore him, Cynthia. He's Irish and so a big fan of the Manchester Buccs (who on earth knows why)
