My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

WORLDWIDE | Monday, 23 April 2012 | Views [160] | Scholarship Entry

Read the topic of this essay, I suddenly recognized that people always talk about the culture, but obviously, they don’t know clearly what culture is? What’s the shape of the culture and how can we touch it. Culture needs something to cover it. And what do you thing can affect to humankind’s mindset in a wide range? Only FOOD as I think.
Have you ever tried Singaporean food? Please don’t think Singapore is a small-area-country so the Food here is simple too. Hey guys, that’s wrong identity. I’m sure that it’s very difficult to find a food store in Singapore which has all kinds of food. As I’ve known, Singapore is a mixture of many different cultures, such as Chinese, Indian, Malaysian; and that’s the reason why Singapore has a plentiful food-culture. Chinese food? Yeah, it’s healthy and yummy; how about Indian cuisines? Ohm...spicy and kindly spices; and Malaysian food? You’ll really interest if you’re Muslims or want to try something new like me.
Have eaten many kinds of food in Singapore, but the first impression about the cuisines of this country had reached me on the plane. It was: Nasi Lemak. In general, it’s steamed rice with omelet, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and sometimes fried chicken. Too simple, right? But I know it is the delication. Open the box of Nasi Lemak, your nose will smell the special odor of coconut milk, and then look at the color: a perfect picture of many ingredients. Let’s use your fingers to get an anchovy; the sight of beach will appear in front of you. So, in short, I just want to say that, I see the life of the people insight the Nasi Lemak. The fishermen have no time to prepare a gaudy meal, they use anything around them, but the effect they made for the cuisine is uncountable. Others will know about their life, be curious to discover their culture and then try more valuable things like this. That’s the strength of the FOOD. I’m sure that!
