My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Worldwide | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos
I remember my first camera. It was a Fisher Price Changeable Disc Camera. I would spend hours pressing the shutter button, which took me through images of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Twenty-seven years later, I am still pressing the shutter button, but this time on an upgraded camera, and with a view of my own.
For me, the act of taking a photo is a journey—not just physically, but spiritually. A photo can capture history; it can capture a memory, and a moment in time. By merely looking at the photo in the frame, I can relive the time and place that it was taken in. My senses open up and a story takes over. As the Chinese proverb states: One picture is worth ten thousand words. This for me is photography.
During this application, I have been able to look back and reflect on the time I spent in Mexico and Guatemala—two countries that changed the course in my life. If I were to win this competition, it would mean the chance at obtaining experience in a profession that is still so new to me. It would mean that I would be able to learn the stories of Oman and have an opportunity to capture and hopefully share them with the world.
