My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Worldwide | Thursday, September 30, 2010 | 5 photos
These photos were taken in the space of five days in New York City for use in my travel blog. I like to try to capture the details of a place in a photograph that tells a little more than a postcard might.
Working as a photojournalist for National Geographic was a childhood dream of mine and my blog allows me a small chance to follow this dream. For this trip I have left my SLR at home and I’m travelling with a compact camera for portability and, to some extent, invisibility: I prefer to take my photos without drawing attention to myself if I can.
Good photography records a tiny sliver of time and space and allows it to be shared. My hope for my photography, and for this scholarship, is that I can learn to take photographs intriguing and/or beautiful enough to encourage people to take another look at the subject. In the first instance I would plan to use my improved skills for my blog, later, as my skills develop I would like to work on assignments or books that aim to do the same: ask the viewer to look again at the ordinary, and at the extra-ordinary and to grasp some small piece of how wonderful, and complex, and cruel, and beautiful, the world out there really is.
A note about my contact details: I am currently relocating from the Netherlands to Australia, this explains why my phone number is Dutch but my country of residence is Australia. By December I will be permanently based in Australia.
