My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Mexico | Wednesday, September 15, 2010 | 5 photos
My photographs are not really about a place that I have visited. They are more about the hurricane that visited us. I live in the city of Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In June of 2010, Hurricane Alex passed through our city. It brought immense floods and destroyed a lot of major avenues and roads, it also destroyed soccer fields, go cart-racing tracks, and the biggest flea market in the state, due to the fact that all of these places were right beside the Rio Santa Catarina, the river that passes through the city. As soon as the rain stopped, and the river waters went down, I grabbed my camera and hurried to see what all had happened. I ended up walking almost across the city shooting as much as I could of what Alex had done. I have examined all the photographs and believe that my 5 selected photographs will do the job to reveal the story of what happened in June of 2010. In one of my photographs, there is a sculpture which represents the Hurricane Gilberto that passed through the city in the year 1988, although Alex did more damage than Gilberto. Lots of homes were flooded, and cars destroyed. Roads were heavily damaged and people could not get out. Many were left without water and electricity for over a month. God has blessed Mexico in periods of 100 years. 1810 was Mexico's independence, 1910 was the revolution, and 2010? God decided to break us down with economic crisis, violence, and natural disasters. But no matter the difficulty, my faith remains in the Glory of God and His Son. I hope, for whoever is reading this, that may bring these photographs to the attention of many people. I was born in Mexico, and I have a strong ambition to become a National Geographic photojournalist. May God give me grace upon my authorities and bless each one of you.
