I went to Myanmar last March. It was my first trip to a closed-socialist country. Since I come from a liberal democratic country, my view about a closed-socialist country are; poor, undeveloped, and it has nothing. Books and news that I've read could influence that much. But after I arrived there, I guess I was slapped by the facts of Myanmar that I see.
The uniqueness of Myanmar that I saw are; Most people, women and men, wear Sarong or Longyi wherever they go. No matter you're rich or poor. It's a Burmese culture and succes to erase the gap in daily life. Besides sarong, they also use Tanakha, a liquid cold powder made from wood dust. It protects skin from sun hit, many Burmese complexion are yellow and clear. At the second day, I was going native by using Sarong and Tanakha, and it was nice. Another uniqueness of Myanmar is we should chirping like a bird when we wanna call a people. If we shout "hey" they would get upset. I was jaw dropping when I saw this at the first time. When walking around the city, you won't see any motorcyle in Yangon this policy is made to maintain the street density in Yangon. You also will see many pottery with water inside. The citizen put it in front of their home for the pedestrian and Monk if they suddenly get thirsty. I was so thankfull for this hospitality.
Myanmar also very rich. It has uranium, oil, natural gas, jade, saphir, pearl, & gold mining in a big number. They could provide their own food stock, like rice. Their rice actually is the best in Asia, better than Thailand and Vietnam has. But poorly Junta Military limited the export so we couldnt hear the wealth of Myanmar. Since election 2011, Myanmar already change, Junta already deemphasized their power so we wont see any bloody demonstration again nowadays. Yangon is really safe. I never regret my visit to Yangon. It gave me a new perspective about how a socialist country run their daily life. Thank you for teaching me and showing me a new world, Burmese.
