My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Growing up American Indian and off the reservation I feel privileged to have more opportunities, but I am also missing part of my cultural identity. This has created a void sparking a curiosity for other cultures especially as I traveled to places like Australia, Japan, and Hawaii. Now, I hope to be considered for this opportunity to travel and gain firsthand experience of Middle Eastern cultures and to reflect that experience through my art.
Photography is my favorite medium because it creates memories, an emotion, a relationship locked in time between light, a subject, and the camera. I prefer black and white images since I feel color images can be distracting to the emotional response of the audience. “Migrant Mother” by Dorothea Lange has been a favorite of mine for years; the gray tones seem to be more emotionally dramatic than if she had used higher contrast. I would love to pursue a career as a photographer to evoke this kind of an emotional response. It has always been a dream of mine to travel the world and take photographs, not for my own sake but for the sake of art and beauty.
