My Scholarship entry - A local encounter that changed my life

WORLDWIDE | Thursday, 12 April 2012 | Views [208] | Scholarship Entry

I had never heard of obligatory nude beaches. Would there be a soldier armed yet unclothed imploring me sternly to disrobe once I arrived?

Practically the minute I got there a guy takes my hand and tells me he'll show me some good places to take pictures. I didn't have to take my clothes off. I felt overjoyed. Suddenly he strips off and starts demanding I take photos of him. Then we have a brief kiss.

As bad luck would have it we met again on the street. This was awkward because I'd pretended to be staying in the swanky Pousada Flamingo.
“What’s your name?” I asked as we walked towards a moonlit lake holding hands.
“João” he said.

A couple of days pass and we’ve fallen in love. He wants me to move in with him. I resist.
A day later: I agree to move in with him but first we have to have another day at the nudey beach. (His idea)

Before we go, he insists on shaving me EVERYWHERE. I even learn the word in Portuguese. It’s rapar. We disrobe slowly confirming how we are all a bit scared and exhilarated. All the couples sitting slightly far apart for the sake of politeness. João jumps up and squats down at a girl’s head with his willy dangling in her face and talks to them for AGES. I am alone with my sudoku book, legs crossed and arm casually draped across my body. No-one can see anything-brilliant strategist that I am. But then I get cold.
And I storm off.

In the course of the alone time, I decide to forgive him and I knock on his door. Now he is pissed off and is doing the ignoring me thing and he keeps checking his watch and saying something about being late for mass and says, You are dumped for being too jealous! So I leave, crying, and return to the hotel where I ask to stay another night and that night amid much inner turmoil I suddenly realise that I’ve been mixing up the verbs Quedarse and Dejar all along, for five months and this made everything SO MUCH WORSE!
This was, of course, long before I realised I was pregnant.
