"Located about 20 minutes outside of Munich is the city of Dachau. In 1933 the Nazi’s built a concentration camp here that would become the prototype for all future installments. More than 35,000 Prisoners were believed to have lost their lives here between 1933-1945. Today Dachau stands as a memory, to remind us of the hate that once reigned so powerful. It’s very strange to even visit such a place. It’s as if your mere presence is a desecration and insult to what had happened. Even today, on a completely different level, any time spent at Dachau concentration camp will not be pleasant."
I am a studented from the University of CIncinnati currently studying abroad in Munich. I have been taking pictures since I was a kid and only recently have I been getting recognition for some of my pictures. I have a blog where I feature all of the work that I do. http://jeremyheslup.com
After traveling around Europe for almost 2 months, I have seen a lot. And nothing is more important me than being able to convery what I show through images. Each picture is a story in itself, and each story has a focus with many elements around it. I try to encompass all of these things in every picture I take.
For example the picture of the gate reflected in water from Dachau. The gate says "Arbeit Macht Frei". In German this means work will make you free. But since this was a blatent lie given to the prisoners of Dachau, I chose to shoot a reflection, and in that it appear backwards. This is to show how reverse and vexed the statement is. It's things like these that I love to do to make my photo's mean something.
Thanks for your time!
