Welcome to Austria!

The first time I traveled in a German speaking country I was in for a pleasant surprise! I was bicycling through a small town high in the Austrian Alps when it started raining. It was also starting to get dark, so I decided to look for a place to stay for the night. I saw a sign that said Gausthof, and I thought, oh, I know what that is, it's a Guesthouse. So I went into the Gausthof, and asked for a room. They looked at me very funny, reached down under the counter, pulled up a bottle of rum, and poured me a shot! That's when I learned that "rum" is pronounced "room" in Austria! The reason they looked at me so funny was that they were trying to figure out how a total stranger in such a small town would know that this Gausthof was actually an undercover bar!
