Like most towns, it has a thriving market on the main street. However, Israeli settlers came with the encouragement of the government, and made a part of the town their own, displacing Arab people from their homes and businesses. A few blocks along the main street, and the markets are long closed as a result of partitioning the city between Arab and Israeli areas.
