Aswan

EGYPT | Wednesday, 9 January 2008 | Views [771]

We arrived in Aswan around 10:30. I had slept only on and off during the night but both the boys said they had slept soundly.

We booked into a hotel on the Nile - we had checked a couple looking for something cheap but somehow couldn't work out what we needed to do to get the prices down to those we expected. We have been ignoring touts in favour of Lonely Planet recommendations - but this is not working out to be such a good strategy. We ended up paying more than we were happy with because we haven't worked out how to bargain them down successfully. The room was a bit noisy and the bathroom unpleasant though not disgusting.

We wandered around the city for a while mainly in the main souq (market) but got fed up with the hard sell and our inability to get any food or even snacks at what we considered reasonable prices. We are clearly doing something wrong.
We discovered a new drink call fahrouz which is a malted softdrink and very nice.

In the afternoon we decided to take a sunset felucca ride - which turned out to be a bit of comedy in itself - but I will have to describe that when I have more time.
