My Scholarship entry - Magic moments in Manmoyi

Capturing moments. Chasing light. Photography, my all-consuming creative outlet. It’s been a big part of my 35 years, alongside my other passions of winter sports, surfing, travel, and outdoor adventure. By the time I started university it became a dream, a dream that one day my photos would grace the pages that consumed my youth. But life had other ideas, and after dabbling in media as a newspaper reporter, I became a teacher – this dream had to wait. However, the desire to ‘get published’ remained, and ironically, teaching has provided my best photographic opportunities - generous holiday time ensued travel, including a snowboarding trip to Alaska. It’s here I got my first published ‘wallpaper’ shot, a snowboarder riding a mountain line called ‘RFS’ (or Really F’ing Steep). To me, that photo was 20 years in the making, a reminder to never give up. This year I met a kindred spirit working in community health, and we are set to explore island life in the Top End of Australia. However, part of this move involves a step back from the classroom to seek media projects – 2015, a blank canvas, ready to be filled, with not least, a paid photographic trip of a lifetime to South America.
