My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Before I could even read, I gazed into a window of the world provided by the images in the National Geographic magazines on our family's coffee table. My eyes pored over every vibrant detail, illustrating lives unmet, cultures unknown. I dreamed about entering the stories of these photos, about making them my own reality, but like many others, have instead spent a few too many hours fettered in a cubicle.
My passion for photography has grown alongside these dreams and, perhaps expectedly, the fear of not following my dreams eclipsed my fear of following them. I took a four-month leave of absence to travel Asia. I met strangers who became friends and invited me into their lives. It was a joy to be immersed in new worlds and learn about how others live. Upon coming back to the office, the impermanence of my old job was clear and I knew I wanted to share these stories with others.
In the day by day refinement of my craft and vision I have learned that my passion is visual storytelling, particularly documenting the changing cultures and environments that will never be as they are again. I am excited to discover this mentorship opportunity to move towards achieving these goals.
