Eithiopian reality

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 3, 2010 | 5 photos

The images provided tell a story of hope and faith in the face of overwelming poverty, disease and trauma in Eithiopia, one of the poorest lands in the world, to which I visited in 2009. The photos being taken at Entoto Mariyam a Coptic religious centre outside Adis Adaba. I am studying photography at tafe and this particular project was aimed to bring greater awareness of the continued poverty and the blight of suffers of diseases such as AIDs afflicting so many there. I have travelled also to other third world destinations such as Pakistan, Cambodia and the Middle East to such areas as Jordan and Egypt, where in many ways similar issues arise. In my travels to Eithiopia as well as to the other destinations mentioned the irony of the rich cultural histories of such places compared to the comtempory wide scale destitution was very evident. The photographs chosen reflect the powerful modern realities in Eithiopia of faith which originated in old testament times and the reality of destitution and disease in a place where faith is needed just to bear one more day of such an existence.
