My Photo scholarship 2011 entry
Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos
My name is David Campbell, I'm 32, I currently reside in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. I am an amateur photographer that is looking to move into the professional arena. During my time in the Australian Defence Force my passion for photography developed from a hobby into a serious career choice, since leaving the ADF I have taken steps to start my own photography business.
I have taken photos in an amateur capacity for several years in the defence force in addition to my daily job, and have undertaken a basic photography course in the Army.
I believe I would benefit from this scholarship by taking me out of my comfort zone and developing my skills under the guidance of a world class photographer. The ability to learn in an environment such as South Africa would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and develop my skills to a world class professional level.
The photos I have chosen were taken on a trip to Timor Leste, they depict the children of Timor, both within the city of Dili and out in the rural areas.
The photos tell the story of life in Timor in particular the lives of the children. From working in the fields in a rural area, to selling mobile phones in the busy Dili Markets. It shows the impact that modernisation has had on how the Timorese children are growing up and how they will continue to be affected as the country develops further.
The images show the independence of the Timorese people, from fishing with an water bottle hand reel, to working in the fields. They show that the people are independent and resourceful.
I enjoyed taking the photos as they were challenging and a break from the landscapes and airborne images I had been taking.
I hope you enjoy the photos and allow me the opportunity to travel to South Africa to develop my skills.
